02 · Professional or Standard

Every film stock comes on two bases with the same look.

What differs is the camera profile underneath, the first step where Lightroom turns your file into color. Install both: they sit in separate groups, so you can switch any time.

Recommended

Professional

Built on AVS Base Neutral

  • ResultSame film stock, same look, on every camera.
  • HowA neutral camera profile I measured for each camera model.
  • NeedsA raw file from a camera on the camera list.
Always works

Standard

Built on Adobe Standard

  • ResultWorks on any camera Lightroom supports.
  • HowUses Adobe's own default camera profile.
  • Use whenYour camera isn't on the list, or you edit JPEGs.

03 · Installation

One import installs everything in Lightroom Classic.

These are profiles, not presets: they appear in the Profile Browser. Choose your app.

Lightroom Classic

  1. Unzip the download

You'll see the numbered folders 1 to 4.

  2. Open the Develop module

In Lightroom Classic, on macOS or Windows.

  3. File > Import Develop Profiles and Presets

From the menu bar at the top.

  4. Select the ZIPs in folders 1, 2 and 3

All at once is fine. No need to unzip them.

  5. Restart Lightroom

Camera profiles only load at startup.

Note

Camera Raw comes along. Everything you install in Lightroom Classic works in Adobe Camera Raw in Photoshop too.

Lightroom & mobile

Lightroom Classic doesn't sync profiles. The cloud-based Lightroom app on your computer does, and takes everything to your phone and iPad.

  1. Open Lightroom on your computer

The cloud-based app, not Lightroom Classic. Same Adobe account as your phone.

  2. File > Import Profiles and Presets

Select the ZIPs in folders 1, 2 and 3.

  3. Wait for the cloud icon to turn solid

Then open Lightroom on your phone: everything is under Profile > Browse.

Professional on mobile needs this route. Camera profiles only reach your phone when imported in the cloud-based Lightroom app. Imported in Lightroom Classic only? Use Standard on mobile. AVS Lab Tech is desktop-only.

Photoshop (Adobe Camera Raw)

Already installed in Lightroom Classic? Then you're done: both share the same folders.

  1. Open a raw file in Camera Raw

    From Photoshop or Bridge.

  2. Presets > ··· > Import Profiles & Presets

The three-dot menu in the Presets panel.

  3. Select the ZIPs in folders 1, 2 and 3

    Then restart Photoshop.

By hand

Unzip everything first. Lightroom Classic and Camera Raw read from the same two folders, so one copy covers both. Both folders are hidden by default.

macOS

  1. Open the hidden folder

In Finder press Cmd+Shift+G and paste a path below.

  2. Folders 1 and 3 go into Settings

    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/Settings
  3. Folder 2 goes into CameraProfiles

    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles
  4. Restart Lightroom Classic or Photoshop

Profiles are only read at startup.

Windows

  1. Open the hidden folder

Press Win+R and paste a path below.

  2. Folders 1 and 3 go into Settings

    %AppData%\Adobe\CameraRaw\Settings
  3. Folder 2 goes into CameraProfiles

    %AppData%\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
  4. Restart Lightroom Classic or Photoshop

Profiles are only read at startup.

Using “Store presets with this catalog” in Lightroom Classic? Then presets go into the Settings folder next to your catalog, profiles stay in CameraRaw. The cloud-based Lightroom has no manual route.

04 · Camera profiles

Professional loads the right camera profile on its own.

The Professional versions need the AVS Base Neutral profile of your camera. It installs with folder 2, and you never select it yourself.

  1. It loads on its own

Apply a Professional profile and Lightroom picks your camera's file.

  2. Install all of them

It doesn't hurt. Pick up another camera later and Professional works right away.

  3. One file per camera

Named like Sony ILCE-7M4 - AVS Base Neutral.dcp. Search your camera by any name, e.g. A7 IV.

  4. Professional needs raw files

Camera profiles only exist for raw files. For JPEGs, use Standard.

Camera not listed? Then Lightroom has no AVS Base Neutral profile for it, and the Professional versions won't work as intended. Use Standard, and write to me with your camera model.

05 · AVS Lab Tech

AVS Lab Tech installs once in the Plug-in Manager.

The operator desk of a Fuji Frontier, as a floating panel next to your photos. It runs in Lightroom Classic 12 or newer. Install the profiles first.

  1. Move the plugin somewhere permanent

AVS Lab Tech.lrplugin from folder 4 into Documents, not Downloads.

  2. File > Plug-in Manager > Add

Select the folder, click Add Plug-in, then Done.

  3. File > Plug-in Extras > Open Lab Tech…

    Works in every module.

  4. Pick film, EV and base

Professional is chosen automatically when available.

Open it with Ctrl+L on a Mac

Open System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > App Shortcuts, add Lightroom Classic and type the menu title with three spaces in front:    Open Lab Tech…. Lightroom indents plug-in menu entries, and the shortcut only works with those spaces. Pick Ctrl+L and restart Lightroom.

Tip

On first start, the plugin adds Film Stock Shortcuts to your Presets panel and asks for one restart. Keep them: the plugin uses them to load every film stock reliably.

AVS Lab Tech v1.1. The full manual is in folder 4.

06 · Using the profiles

Each film stock has its own group with six exposures.

Open the Profile Browser in the Develop module (the four-square icon next to Profile) and pick a group.

Exposure

Each exposure is its own scan of the film. The difference is color and contrast, the way the film responds to under- and overexposure, not brightness. Pick by the look you want.

Amount

The slider below the profile name, 0 to 200. The profiles are built for 100. Your own sliders stay at zero, so every edit still works as usual.

Click the star on a profile to keep your go-to film stocks at the top.

07 · Workflow presets

The toolkit adds 37 presets in four series.

You find them in the Presets panel under ANALOG VISION STUDIO – Toolkit. They emulate what changes between scans and prints, from density to grain. Every series ends with a RESET.

  • A · Tone adjustments

    Contrast and density

Contrast + / −, Shadows + / −, Highlights + / −, Faded Blacks and Faded Whites (each also stronger), resets for curves, faded blacks and faded whites.

  • B · Color adjustments

    Tints and saturation

Shadow tints in cyan, green, blue, red and magenta, highlight tints in red, yellow and cyan, Matrix Saturation from −20 to +30, resets for both.

  • C · Film texture

    Grain

ISO 100, 200 and 400 grain through three luminance masks: coarser in the shadows, finer in the highlights, like real film. Plus a grain reset.

  • D · Masking tools

    Subject and sky

Subject Enhancer and Reducer, Sky Enhancer and Reducer, Portrait Enhancer. They build on Lightroom's automatic subject, sky and people masks.

08 · Updating from V2

V2 owners get all six film stocks of V2.1 for free.

That includes Vision 3 250D. Install V2.1 as described above: nothing to uninstall.

Portra 400, ColorPlus 200 and Velvia 100

Not in this first release, and nothing changes about them. They stay in your library and keep working exactly as they do today. For V2.1 I rebuilt my entire pipeline from the ground up, and I'm rolling the new system out film stock by film stock instead of rushing everything at once. The six film stocks of the Essential Edition come first. Portra 400, ColorPlus 200 and Velvia 100 will be rebuilt as part of the upcoming editions, and as an existing customer you'll get those at a loyalty price.

09 · Quick fixes

Most problems are solved by one restart of Lightroom.

I don't see the profiles.
They're in the Profile Browser, not the Presets panel. Restart Lightroom. Still missing? Click + > Manage Profiles in the Profile Browser and tick the AVS groups.
Professional looks off.
Your camera's AVS Base Neutral profile is missing or not loaded yet. Restart Lightroom and check the camera list. Not listed? Use Standard.
They're not on my phone.
Import in the cloud-based Lightroom app with the same Adobe account, then give sync a minute. Lightroom Classic doesn't sync profiles.
Can I use them on JPEGs?
Yes, with the Standard versions. Professional needs a raw file, because it builds on the camera profile of your camera.
My download link stopped working.
Each order can be downloaded four times. Reply to your order email and I'll sort it out.
The look is too strong.
Lower the Amount slider below the profile name.
